5SOS Say You Should Expect Derp Con to be ‘Weird, Cool’ and ‘Funny’

For nearly three months, we’ve been patiently waiting for this weekend to arrive, and now it’s finally here: Derp Con, an event that’s gearing up to be the ultimate experience for 5 Seconds of Summer fans.
5SOS are flying in lucky fans from around the world to watch them perform two shows (November 15 and 16) at the Forum in Inglewood, California. While there, they’ll also participate in the band’s convention, which may or may not include lap dances - according to the boys themselves.
“Derp Con is a range of things from meeting us, to our show to acoustic performances and basically everything to do with 5 Seconds of Summer over one weekend,” said Ashton. “[It’s] like a convention; we sort of took the inspiration from Comic-Con … a gathering from everything to do with comics but it’s 5 Seconds of Summer instead, so it’s cool. It’s gonna be good.”
And much like Comic-Con, they’re encouraging those lucky fans to dress up like them, or just rock something “weird.”
“Fans can dress up, they can do whatever they like,” Ashton said. “We have lots of weird stuff as well. We are a pretty weird band so there is gonna be people dressed as other stuff; it’s going to be funny.”
The band are looking forward to the “cool cultural experience” the convention will provide since many fans are coming in from countries they haven’t visited before.
But more importantly, they hope to throw an event the 5SOSFam will remember for a really long time.
“I think there’s a lot of bands that have done cool and unique stuff and hopefully this whole Derp Con-5SOS thing is something that they’ll remember and tell their kids about like, ‘My favorite band invited me over to L.A. and then I got to see them live and meet them,’ ” Ashton said. “When I was younger, I wish Green Day or something did something like that because that would have been the coolest thing ever.” Don’t we all, Ashton. Don’t we all.
